Twitch continues to be the top destination for live streams of gamers playing games. Although some have expressed bewilderment at the popularity of people watching others play online, the phenomenon continues on unabated. We currently only do a weekly livestream Ogre Game Time on Wednesdays, but one foreign livestreamer has came from our community and found quite a bit of success and we plan on offering more livestreams in the future. On the flip side, just going through Twitch as a viewer and looking at all the different games and channel, it is hard not to have fun. All types of games and systems are represented for a large amount of variety. Tonight, for example, I went into a channel for Rocket League where the channel owner was giving away a PC and the spam in chat was insane. You had to type in a keyword and then the winner was chosen by roll. In another channel, it was a 2 year old wrestling game where six divas were throwing each other off a towering cage onto the floor. The chat was all explosive with not a single non capitalized letter to be found.

The most watched games were mostly action packed. Some are new and some are not so new. If I had to name the top four genres represented, MOBAs, shooters, sandbox games, and then MMORPGs would top the list. Some of the ones listed below are no-brainers but there are a few surprises. These are listed in terms of popularity at the time of this writing. Some games were skipped over for mainly games that we cover on the PC. However, those are the top two without a doubt.

Top Twitch Games (PC)

League of Legends – The top MOBA and the most popular game on Twitch a lot of the time.

Hearthstone – The most watched card game by far.

Counterstrike Global Offensive – Leads the pack for online shooters.

DOTA 2 – The second most popular MOBA.

H1Z1 – The most surprising game in popularity and the top for any sandbox game.

Grand Theft Auto V – Seems to fluctuate quite a bit.

Minecraft – Thought this would be higher.

Smite – Third ranked MOBA.

Runescape – The highest Free MMORPG.

World of Warcraft – No surprise that it tops all pay MMORPGs.

Diablo 3 – Among four or five other games by Blizzard that rank high.

Heroes of the Storm – My pick for this genre, but it is not doing that hot compared to the others.

Ark: Survival Evolved – Among the best in survival sandbox games.

World of Tanks – Still chugging along with its two spin-offs, World of Warplanes and World of Battleships.

Rocket League – New game that is already doing well.

Like most things, multiplayer games are evolving. Instead of MMOs with levels as days past, a new genre has emerged called Survival Sandbox Games. The worlds are very open and players can do more overall than ever before. The genre basically started with a FPS Mod for ARMA II known as Dayz and has thankfully grown beyond just zombies to include dinosaurs and realms of fantasy. One glaring thing about this type of game is that all are currently in Early Access. Thus, they are still evolving as games. In fact, this whole genre is still evolving. In my opinion, this genre has a chance to reinvent the whole MMO industry if done right. If that happens, ARK could be the “World of Warcraft” of this emerging trend.

Sandbox Survival:

Ark: Survival Evolved – The best all around game so far.

ark

Reign of Kings – Quite a bit of negative backlash.

reignofkings1

Savage Lands – Fantasy setting and the one I own.

savage-lands

The Forest -Solid game but a lot of wood chopping.

The-Forest

H1Z1 – Zombies again.

h1z1

Age of Survival – Launches in late August.

ageofsurvival

Empyrion – Space survival.

empyrion

Rust – One of the oldest here but still listed in Early Access.

Subnautica – Under water sandbox.

7 Days to Die – Zombies in a voxel-based world like Minecraft.

As can be seen by the graphics above, these games are drop dead gorgeous. What other advantages do these have over MMORPGs? A few actually. First, these are buy only with no subscription fees. You own the game and that is it. Your main concern is surviving and that is not easy.

Second, you can do so much more such as build and destroy environments and make weapons completely from materials. Hunting also means a lot more since it is needed to live. Lastly, there are no levels and grinds that were complained about for many years. In all the years of GameOgre, that was the main gripe that I see involving online games. For example, I bought Savage Lands for the fantasy aspect. In SL, you are shipwrecked on a beach and have a checklist of tasks to help you live longer. There are no silly missions like go kill 9 rats because you are just trying to survive and hopefully thrive. Instead of meaningless levels, food and shelter are the order of the day.

All that said, stay tuned while this very exciting niche continues to emerge in popularity. Anybody who does not like MOBAs and enjoys first person open worlds should be very interested in the future.

Since I was writing about stocks before I founded GameOgre many years ago, it is great to see what strides this industry is making with games. There used to not be hardly any and now it is hard not to find one. There are some on a PCs and some on mobile devices like Android and iOS. In the summer of 2014, I rediscovered stocks and found Stock Wars on my iPad. to play. The money I could use was virtual, but the stocks that you can buy are real. Thus, these “games” can also be considered to be simulators since they also can help you learn how to invest in the stock market when you have real money for it. Believe me, I would have much rather learned more about the stock market by using virtual money than by trial and error with real money.

Another advantage to virtual investing is that you can focus more on bigger companies with higher share prices. If you are just starting out, it is easy to get caught up in lower priced stocks that may lose you money or just be dead money for long periods of time. Everybody has heard various stories about somebody investing in a penny stock and then becoming fabulously rich. However, stories like that are more like buying the winning lottery ticket.

Playing these simulators is not only good for learning and experience, but also very fun. Stocks often trade like roller coasters so it can be quite a rush when you choose one just before it takes off. You can also follow the companies behind the stocks to learn more about them. For example, I used to buy game stocks based mainly on the games the game companies made and sold. Of course, the main one that comes to mine is the old THQI. It was a hot stock for a while when they made the WWE games years ago and it made me a lot of mo0ney before I finally sold it. Thus, the research was more fun than usual.

Below are a list of stock games that I have played and that you can play today.

Stock Games:

Virtual Stock Exchange – Almost 25,000 games are in play right now.

Stock Wars – Mobile app where you can test your stock picking ability.

Investopedia Stock Simulator – Played by over 700,000 people world wide.

Have you ever ran across a free game online where all you had to do was click on certain things and you would be on your way to being a hero or a gazillionaire? Come to find out, there are many of these games and they are very fun at first. In fact, they are so fun they can be almost addictive. You keep getting more powerful as time gores on and you want to upgrade to that next big level. The games even continue while you are away. All you do is get it started and watch the money just flow in like from a well-oiled machine.

However, that uforia does not usually last for that long as you start to run out of goals or stuff to do. In some instances, the smooth machine turns into nothing but a grind towards the end. As much as we want the magic to last, it seldom does. That is just how these games are made so far. Hopfully one will reach that holy grail where the game continues to excite players for weeks and months  instead of just days for most. Below are some of the best games in this little niche, but we will be adding more to our Free Game section in the Directory.

Clicking Games:

Cookie Clicker – One of the first clickers.

Clicker Heroes – A game on Steam that has become quite popular.

Adventure Capitalist – How much money can you make?

Doge Miner – Mining simulator by the clicks.

An old game that has been out for many years (May 2011) has became the third most popular game on Steam for the day: Terraria. Of course, this was likely caused by the long awaited 1.3 update that looks so massive that it takes an enormous amount of scrolling to get to the bottom of it. We also added a new dedicated Terraria forum for the ogres who play the game. We even may play this game soon during our Ogre Game Time tomorrow at 3PM Central on the OgreMedia channel via Twitch.

The rest of the top games on Steam for Tuesday were not too surprising since two were classics from Valve and one was the the best MOBA after League of Legends right now. The other surprise was a little free game called Clicker Heroes. Past the first five, there were not that many surprises. Stallwarts like Warframe, Rust, Grand Theft Auto 5, Garry’s Mod, Civ 5, CS, and CS: Source, Borderlands 2, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim were all there.

clickerhero

Five Most Popular Steam Games Today:

1. Dota 2 – The most played MOBA on Steam.

2. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – Also popular on Game Ogre.

3. Terraria – The update was the main reason here.

4. Team Fortress 2 – All-time shooting classic.

5. Clicker Heroes – Free game that is simple yet fun.

The big question for Terraria is whether it can stay in the top 5 post update or will the update be a disappointment. Hopefully, it can continue this momentum because I remember quite a long time ago when the game was not supposed to get anymore updates.  Thankfully, that was not the case:).

Without question, there are many different types of online games including MMORPGs, online shooters, MUDs, MMOFPS, MMORTS, and more recently, MOBAs. However, online action games in general do not have a snazzy acronym. Even without one this genre continues to improve with many fun games to lead the way. Also looking for games that would not fall into the Online Shooter category either. Lastly, some fighting games will make their way on this list as well. With that in mind, GameOgre.com has added a dedicated forum for Multiplayer Action games. Here are just some of the games that fit into this category:

Chivalry Medieval Warfare – Very popular medieval fighting game that is currently in the GameOgre.com forum shop.

chivalrydeadliest

Mount and Blade: Warband – Better game than the original. Has a single player mode also.

mount-blade1

Brawlhalla – Tight brawler with a bots or real players.

brawlhala

Splash Fighters – One of the oldest and most fun online fighting games over the years.

Warframe – Science fiction actioner that is free-to-play.

warframe8

Castle Crashers – Award winning 2D arcade adventure with everything but the kitchen sink.

castlecrashers2

A few honorable mentions on the off-beat side include Barony, Sumo Revise, Streets of Fury EX, and Miner Warfare.

GameOgre.com has had a forum shop for community members for a number of years now. The shop started out with just forum related stuff like sticky posts, names changes, and title changes. Then cards like the Ultimate Game Card  came along and was in high demand until it finally retired in late 2014. However, the cards were followed by something that is still in the shop to the day: Steam games. Steam came up with a concept that fits our forum shop well with the four pack. The Steam Four Pack allows me to buy a game on Steam and then put the other three copies in the shop. When a member has enough forum points, they can buy the game and I send it to them on Steam.

This has worked so well over the years that many games have been bought this way. This works the best with multiplayer games since the ones who get can play together. In one instance, this worked out so well that we bought extra copies because more members wanted to join in the fun. All told, think we bought around 15 copies of Dungeon Defenders and played it for months. Unfortunately, this has not been repeated yet in Dungeon Defenders II, but it is still a possibility someday since it does have a 4 pack available.

Listed below are the games that we have had Four Packs for in the past.

Payday 2

Trine 2

Payday

E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy

Orion: Dino Horde

Guns of Icarus Online

Dungeon Defenders

Hoard

Nuclear Dawn

Madballs

Sanctum

Monday Night Combat

Lead and Gold

Castle Crashers

Worms Reloaded

Awesomnauts

Ace of Spades

Here are the games that have at least one copy still available in the forum shop:

Hammerwatch

Frozen Synapse Prime (only some countries)

Speedrunners

Risk of Rain

Monaco

The Ship

Zeno Clash

Note that three of the games above have the three full copies still in the forum shop.

Voxel or block based FPS shooters are not exactly new due to the success of both Counter-Strike and Minecraft. Many games have came out trying to find that right formula of both games and create gaming magic. The idea is to be able to create as much as possible ala Minecraft and then have a shooter as the main game dynamic and be able to construct as well as blow anything in the environment up. However, there has not been a game that was what you call a homerun.

Ace of Spades and Brick Force are two of the earliest of this nice little niche, but neither one grabbed a kept a huge player base. Thankfully, this did not stop other attempts at combining the two genres since it does have a great deal of potential. In fact, the possibilities could be endless if you really think about it. Who wouldn’t want to make any character or design any weapon to find in any type of environment?

Block Shooters:

Ace of Spades – One of the the first voxel shooters by Jagex.

Blockstorm – One of the newest and best entries so far. Could be an indie gem if players support it enough.

Brick Force – Free to play on Steam.

Block-n-LoadSandbox building and tactical FPS by Jagex. Is much newer than Ace of Spades.

Castleminer Z – Online coop survival game.

Guncraft – Another early entry. Costs $15 on Steam and lacks player support.

Murder Miners – Also a hit on Xbox Live. Costs $1.99 on Steam.

Of the games above, GameOgre.com has found Blockstorm to be the best of the bunch by far. It is the most creative and has the most solid gameplay. Workstorm (the name of their Steam Workshop is filled with a plethora of innovative and sometime humorous weapons, characters, and maps. For example I was able to play as characters like Shrek and Chuck Norris while wielding katanas and a dragon themed sniper rifle. The amount of created content is actually mind boggling for a game that just officially launched on Steam.

For anybody who likes professional wrestling or not, you have to admit that the characters are the main driving forces of the genre. This should make for very good online wrestling games right? Hmmmm, maybe. There have been a few games over the years that have captured the imagination of the sport/business online via PCs and a few more very playable games via consoles like the Xbox 360 and PS3.  In fact, these console games have had it the best for pro wrestling since, well, forever. However, the PC is getting more of these games finally. Actually, one of the big WWE console games has finally made it to the PC with WWE 2K15. Things are also improving via mobile devices. The first wrestling card game, WWE Super Card has been a major success on Android and iOS.

Without further ado, here are some squared circle games for the PC, the latest consoles, and mobile devices. Keep in mind that some of the games (most of the PC ones) are simulation and mostly text:

WWE Super Card – The first card game and one of the best wrestling games available anywhere.

Total Extreme Wrestling – In depth simulation that can be bought and played on Steam.

The Wrestling Game – Long time text-based game.

Pro Wrestling X – Early access game on Steam that still needs a lot of development to come to fruition.

Slammed – Remember I talked about some games being very different? This one is actually an interactive novel where you can make choices in the wacky world of wrestling.

WWE 2K14 – Quite possibly the best of the genre on the PS3. The first one in the whole series to have 100 character creation slots and has been more stable than its successor.

WWE 2K15 – The first major wrestling game on the PC since before the Smackdown series started.

Wrestling Revolution 3D – Wrestle on mobile devices.

If you know of any others that are still around and playable, feel free to list them here!
